It would be difficult to find a more charming vintage building in Northwest Portland that is so well placed. Built in 1909, Margaret Apartments has the distinction of being on the National Historic Registry for vintage buildings. In addition, it has one of the only original elevators still in operation. It has been impeccably restored to the standards of the Historic Registry and exudes a grace and elegance that bespeaks a gentler time.
Entering the building through the double glass doors you are greeted with rich woodwork and the ornate caged elevator that has been decorated in the style of Alphonse Mucha. The staircase encircles the open elevator and climbs 5 stories to the skylight on the top floor. Every apartment has details that set it apart from others in the building. Some have window seats, some balconies, some brightly lit sunrooms, some magnificent columns and built in china hutches. Apartments on the upper floors have sweeping views of the west hills and the northwest neighborhood.
Located on NW 21st, Margaret Apartments is in the midst of the bustling NW activity. There are several in house commercial tenants on the ground floor of the building. M Bar is an iconic NW Portland wine bar that pours distinctive wines from Pacific vineyards and beyond. Margaret also hosts the Top Burmese restaurant. It’s nice coming home to Margaret Apartments when these culinary delights are at your front door! If you decide you want to cook for yourself, Trader Joes grocery is the Alphabet District’s purveyor of fresh foods and wonderfully eclectic offerings. Other neighborhood businesses include wonderful Carina Lounge, the McMenamin Brothers’ Blue Moon Restaurant and Ken’s Bakery just across the street. Sister to ever popular NW 23rd shopping district, NW 21st is renowned for hosting delicious restaurants and a unique shopping experience of its own.
